Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) traces its roots to Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and Judo, brought to Brazil by Mitsuyo Maeda in the early 20th century. Carlos Gracie, along with his younger brother Helio Gracie, played a pivotal role in adapting and popularizing these martial arts in Brazil. Carlos Gracie opened a BJJ academy in Rio de Janeiro in the 1920s, where he refined and developed the techniques, placing a strong emphasis on ground combat and leverage.

Rilion Gracie, a member of the prominent Gracie family, continued the legacy by becoming a highly skilled BJJ practitioner and instructor. He contributed to the spread of BJJ in the United States, opening academies and training numerous champions. Rilion's dedication to preserving the art's traditions and effectiveness has solidified his status as a respected figure in the BJJ community. Through the combined efforts of Carlos and Rilion Gracie, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has evolved into a global martial art and sport, renowned for its practicality and effectiveness in self-defense and competitive settings.
